A Study on Quality of Life of Hemodialysis Patients and Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

Abstract
The descriptive study measured the quality of life for hemodialysis patients and peritoneal dialysis patients s an attempt to give nurses basic data to improve life satisfaction of hemodialysis patients and peritoneal dialysis patients.

The research design was descriptive study and the data were obtained by Quality of Life questionnaire.

These data were collected from 50 hemodialysis patients undergoing treatment in one university hospitals and 50 peritoneal dialysis patients living in Taegu city and kyeung Sang Book Do by direct obtaining method from October. 1, to October. 31,1997.

Data analysis was done by the SAS computer program and Descriptive statistics and Cronbach-¥á were used.

The results of this study were as follows :

1. The item mean score for quality of life for total subject was 3.03%. For six subscales in the quality of life scale, the mean scores of subscales were in order of the highest 3.25 for family relationship and the second score 3.16 for emotional state, lower scored subscales were physical state(2.95) and economic state(2.96).

2. The item mean score for quality of life for hemodialysis patient was 2.98. For six subscales in the quality of life scale, the mean scores of subscale were in order of the highest 3.20 for family relationship and relation of neighbors, the lowest scored subscale was physical state 2.80

3. The item mean score for quality of life for peritoneal dialysis patient was 3.13. For six subscales in the quality of life scale, the mean scores of subscale were in order of the highest 3.301 for family relationship relation of neighbors, the lowest scored subscale was economic state 3.03.

4. The score of quality of life of Peritoneal dialysis patients was higher than the score of quality of life for hemodialtsis patient(t=-4.20, p=0.0001)

In conclusion it was found that the quality of life of total subject was low. The quality of life of hemodialysis patients was lower than that of peritoneal dialysis patient. Although chronic disease affect of quality of life, an adequate intervention will improve the life satisfaction.
